'Plein air' painting has been at the heart of my practice for many years. There’s something uniquely compelling about standing in the landscape, painting directly from observation, and responding to the world exactly as it unfolds in front of you. This new collection brings together a series of acrylic works on both canvas and board, each created outdoors and shaped by the immediacy of the moment.

What first drew me to 'plein air' painting was the thrill of it. Working outside is unpredictable — a sudden gust of wind, shifting shadows, changing weather, or a fleeting moment of light can transform a painting in seconds. It’s risky, demanding, and wonderfully energising. That constant need to adapt encourages a spontaneity that has become central to how I paint.

When I began, the challenges were endless: battling the elements, figuring out which materials could withstand the conditions, learning how to chase the light without losing the essence of the scene. The learning curve was steep, but the process taught me to embrace the unexpected.

Over time, I realised that this raw immediacy is exactly what gives 'plein air' work its vitality.

My approach to materials is equally instinctive. While I use traditional tools like brushes and palette knives, I also enjoy experimenting with objects I find on location or tools I’ve made myself. These improvised marks — irregular, surprising, and entirely unplanned — help me capture something unique to each place and moment.

The locations in this collection are places I know intimately. I return to the same spots repeatedly, making studies, watching the seasons shift, and learning how the light behaves. I’ve found that the strongest paintings often emerge only after spending long periods observing a familiar landscape.
